The eight deaths were reported from flood-affected districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Six drowning deaths were reported from Barabanki, Basti and Gorakhpur districts while two succumbed to injuries in a house collapse.

Almost 300 more villages were flooded since Thursday, taking the total number of marooned villages to 1,338.

According to an official spokesman, “Almost two million people have been affected by the floods and around 160,000 have been evacuated from marooned areas so far.”

After the army was called out in Barabanki district Thursday, one column of the local military unit was on Friday deployed in Gorakhpur, where the ravaging Ghaghra river has wreaked havoc.
