According to an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) official, there could be a “revival in monsoon activity” over central and peninsular India over the next day or so due to a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal which would move westwards.

After days of sweltering heat, the capital received good rains in the past three days, recording 185.6 mm, which also brought down the temperature.

On the flip side, the continuous rains, especially on Thursday, led to clogged roads and virtually brought the national capital to a standstill.

On Friday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 30.1 degrees Celsius – four degrees below normal – and a minimum of 24.7 Celsius, two degrees below normal.

Weather officials have forecast more rain, including very heavy showers, over Orissa, north Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the next few days.

“The enhanced rainfall belt is likely to shift to Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and south Rajasthan during Aug 8-11. Gujarat, Konkan and Goa and central Maharashtra are also likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall (more than 250 mm) particularly on Aug 10 and 11,” the weatherman said.

Central and adjoining peninsular India could experience another active spell of rainfall from Aug 11 onwards with the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal.

However, rainfall over northeastern states and northern plains is likely to be subdued till mid August, the official said.
