Srinagar : A Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator in Jammu and Kashmir escaped unhurt after separatist militants ambushed him in the southern district of Shopian Wednesday.

Police said guerrillas attacked the heavily-guarded motorcade of Muhammad Khalil Naikoo while he was on way to village Muradpora near Shopian, about 80 km from here. Naikoo was touring his Wachi constituency.

“Guerrillas fired several bursts of automatic fire at the vehicle of the CPI-M leader but he escaped unhurt,” said a senior police officer. The vehicle was damaged.

His security guards returned the fire to clear the ambush, the police officer said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
