Three national highways to be widened

New Delhi : Parts of three national highways will be widened from four lanes to six to meet the growing transport and logistic requirements in India.

“The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved Thursday six-laning of 838.10 km of three national highways at a total cost of Rs.56.10 billion,” Finance Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters.

“Six-laning of 225.60 km of the Gurgaon-Kotputli-Jaipur sector of National Highway 8 across Haryana and Rajasthan is to cost Rs.15.17 billion.”

“Six-laning of the 239 km stretch of National Highway 8 between Surat in Gujarat and Dahisar in Maharashtra will cost Rs.13.55 billion,” the minister said.

“The CCEA also cleared six-laning of 82.50 km of the Chilkaluripet-Vijaywada sector of National Highway 5 falling in Andhra Pradesh. The Panipat-Jalandhar stretch of National Highway 1, measuring a length of 291 km, will also be widened to six lanes at a cost of Rs.21.98 billion,” he said.

“The project will be implemented under the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) Phase-V on the Design, Build, Finance and Operate (DBFO) pattern,” Chidambaram added.
