By IRNA

Tehran : Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said on Sunday night that Iran reminded the US of its responsibility in Iraq envisaged in the Geneva Convention for the occupying forces.

“Iran has participated in the talks “to remind US of its duties as the occupier of Iraq,” Hosseini said in a televised interview with the Channel One of Iran state-run television, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

He added that clarifying the root causes of the Iraq insurgency and way out of it, and rendering support for democratically-elected government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki were the agenda of Iran-US talks on Iraq.

Strengthening the current political process in Iraq, respecting the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the country as well as the ways to relieve the sufferings of the Iraqi people and government were other major agenda of Iranian talks with the US.

The two sides have so far held three rounds of talks in Baghdad to discuss ways to help restore security in the war-ravaged country.

As for the comments made by US President George Bush over the recent visit to Iran of al-Maliki, Hosseini said “No third country has the right to interfere in relations of other states.”
He said that Iran and Iraq enjoyed deep joint commonalties and cordial relations.

The Iraqi premier visited Iran between August 8-11 and discussed major bilateral, regional and international issues with senior Iranian officials.
