The two hostages are now under the protection of South Korean troops and are receiving medical attention in Afghanistan, said Cho Hee-yong, spokesman for the ministry.

The released hostages are Kim Gina, 32, and Kim Kyung-ja, 37, said Cho.

“We feel fortunate that at least some of the hostages have been released, but we again urge the kidnappers to immediately release all our citizens they hold hostage,” Cho said.

The Taliban had taken 23 South Koreans hostage on July 19 in Ghazni province. The Koreans were in Afghanistan on a humanitarian mission, and were on their way to Kabul. The Taliban demanded the release of rebels in Afghan prisons in exchange for the freedom of the Koreans. Of the 23 in captivity, the terror outfit killed two men separately on July 25 and July 30.
