Senior Indian official calls on Nepal PM

Kathmandu : A wide range of issues, including the ongoing peace process in Nepal, problems in Terai region and bilateral relations came up for talks during a meeting a senior External Affairs Ministry official had with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala here Monday.

Preeti Sharan, Joint Secretary and Nepal Desk Chief at the Ministry, called on Koirala at the latter’s residence at Baluwatar area of the city.

A wide range of issues, including the peace process, Terai problems and bilateral ties were discussed during the meeting, according to sources at the Prime Minister’s Office.

“It was just a familiarisation visit by Sharan and there was no specific agenda for talks,” an Indian Embassy spokesman said without elaborating.

Earlier Sunday, Sharan also met Nepali Congress (Democratic) President Sher Bahadur Deuba, party sources said. During the meeting, the current political situation, bilateral relations and Indian assistance to Nepal were mainly discussed.

The Joint secretary, who arrived on Saturday evening on a five-day visit to Nepal, will also meet Home Minister Krishna Sitoula, CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal and other senior political leaders and government officials, Indian Embassy sources said.
