Toronto : World number one Justine Henin made solid progress in blustery conditions at the Toronto Cup women’s tennis tournament with a straight sets victory over China’s Shuai Peng.
Henin, playing her first event since Wimbledon, won 7-5, 6-2 Thursday and will face Russian Nadia Petrova in the last eight.

“It was tough I can tell you,” said Henin. “For players it was terrible conditions, it’s tough especially when you don’t have a lot of matches.”

Henin’s next opponent, sixth seed Petrova, beat Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-1.

“I don’t want to look too far ahead, I’m still in preparation for the US Open and I don’t want to forget that,” said the Belgian top seed. “I go match after match, a little mistake can be expensive.

“My next goal is my next quarter-final against Petrova. That is going to be tough enough.”

On the same side of the draw, China’s Zi Yan followed up Wednesday’s win over world number four Ana Ivanovic with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) defeat of Eleni Daniilidou of Greece Thursday.

In the other half, third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova saw off Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal clash with 12th seed Tatiana Golovin, who beat Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-0.

Second seed Jelena Jankovic ousted Sybille Bammer 6-2, 6-2 to meet Virginie Razzano, who upset 11th seed Shahar Peer 6-4, 6-3 in the last eight.
