Dhaka : Violence spread through Dhaka University, the best state university of Bangladesh, Monday amid protests against the alleged beating of some students by army men following a quarrel over watching a football match.
About 30 students were injured during the clashes that started after a quarrel between some plainclothes army personnel and students at Dhaka University playground Monday afternoon, Radio Today reported.
After a heated exchange of words during the match between the journalism and public administration departments, at about 4.20 p.m. local time, the army men allegedly started beating the students, private news agency UNB reported.
Later, the students brought out a protest procession. They demanded immediate withdrawal of the army from the campus by 11 a.m. Tuesday.
As demonstrations continued, police used batons to disperse the students.
Around 300 students later regrouped in front of the central library on the campus and gave a strike call for Tuesday at the university and threatened to go on an “indefinite strike”, if their demands are not met.
The army camp was established in the Dhaka University campus after a state of emergency was declared by President Iajuddin Ahmed on Jan 11 in the wake of political turmoil in the country.
