Major attacks on India: from Kashmir to Kanyakumari

Three explosions on Saturday’s that killed at least 45 persons and injured more than 100 in the southern city of Hyderabad were neither endemic nor unique. They followed a long succession of mass-casualty attacks on “soft” targets by militants beyond the volatile northern region of the country. Ironically, while causing excessive human loss and pain, they also added to the creeping sense of unity in what is touted as the most multi-ethnic and divided society in the world.

There were 14 big attacks from the year 2001 to August 2007, in which more then 620 persons including security men killed and as many as were injured. which shows that the militants were successful to show their existence from Kashmir to kanayakumari.

On Oct. 1, 2001 – Militants storm the Jammu and Kashmir state assembly complex, killing about 35 people.

While On Dec. 13 – More than a 12 people, including five gunmen, killed in an attack on parliament in New Delhi.

On Sept. 24, 2002 – Militants with guns and explosives attack the Akshardham temple in Gujarat, killing 31 people and wounding more than 80.

On May 14 – Militants attack an army camp near Jammu, killing more than 30, including wives and children of soldiers.

On March 13, 2003 – A bomb attack on a commuter train in Mumbai kills 11 people.

On Aug. 25 – Two almost simultaneous car bombs kill about 60 in Mumbai.

On Aug. 15, 2004 – Bomb explodes in Assam, killing 16 people, mostly schoolchildren, and wounding dozens.

On Oct. 29, 2005 – Sixty-six people are killed when three blasts rip through markets in New Delhi.

On March 7, 2006 – At least 15 people are killed and 60 wounded in three explosions in the pilgrimage city of Varanasi.

On July 11 – More than 180 people are killed in seven bomb explosions at railway stations and on trains in Mumbai, blamed on militants.

On Sept. 8 – At least 32 people are killed in a series of explosions, including one near a mosque, in Malegaon town, 260 km northeast of Mumbai.

On Feb. 19, 2007 – Two bombs explode aboard a train bound from India to Pakistan, burning to death at least 66 passengers, most of them Pakistanis.

On May 18, 2007 – A bomb explodes during Friday prayers at a historic mosque in Hyderabad, killing 11 worshippers. Police later shoot dead five people in clashes with hundreds of enraged Muslims who protest violently against the attack.
