Soldier’s wife saves three lives after death

New Delhi : Leela Devi lost her battle with brain tumour but even in her death she gave life to three people including a soldier by donating organs.

The 26-year-old wife of Lance Naik G.S. Bisht of 26 Rashtriya Rifles, was pronounced brain dead by armed forced doctors here, following which the solider decided to donate her organs.

She donated her liver and both the kidneys and army hospital authorities said the multi-organ transplant was carried out Sunday.

“A combined team of over 40 doctors and paramedical staff from the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) and Base Hospital at New Delhi successfully transplanted her liver into a serving soldier with terminal cirrhosis due to Hepatitis B,” the hospital said in a statement Monday.

While one kidney was transplanted into a 12-year-old daughter of a soldier suffering from the end stage kidney disease, the second one was handed over to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where it was transplanted into a 45-year-old man suffering from a chronic kidney failure.

Though there is a huge requirement for organs, its donation after brain death is rare in India. The Armed Forces Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Authority (AORTA) was launched earlier this year to increase awareness of organ donation.

AORTA director Col A.K Seth said hundreds of serving personnel and their family members have already pledged to donate their organs.
