Worker found drowned in Italian embassy pool

New Delhi : A youth working with the Italian embassy here was found drowned in the embassy’s swimming pool Monday, police said.

The body of Davender Singh, who was working as pump operator for the past three months in the water- harvesting unit of the embassy, was found in the swimming pool by the other staff.

Singh,21, was a resident of Madhu Vihar, close to Dwarka in southwest Delhi.

The embassy, located in the diplomatic area of Chanakyapuri, informed the police who pulled out the body from the pool.

According to police, the body had been lying in the pool since Sunday and no official or security guards had noticed it as they were reportedly on weekend off.

“We recovered his near-naked body from the embassy pool. It will be premature to say the reason of his death before the post-mortem,” a senior police official said.

“The victim was in undergarments, when the body was pulled out. We have also recovered his clothes and floaters from the pool boundary. Initial investigations suggest that he might have drowned while cleaning the pool,” the official added.

However, the official refused to comment on electrocution marks found on the victim’s hand.

Singh’s family has alleged that Vinay Kumar, a contractor with the embassy, was behind the killing over personal enmity.

“A few days ago, Vinay had exchanged verbal abuses with Davender over salary. Vinay had also threatened him with dire consequences,” said an angry relative of the victim.
