Iraqi accord front may return to Govt if PM implements reform policies – Al-Hashemi

By NNN-KUNA

Baghdad : Vice President Tareq Al-Hashemi has hinted that the Accord Front may return to the government on condition that Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki continues implementing reform policies.

Hashemi, however, hailed the political agreement signed by leaders of four political parties as “a good achievement” amidst political instability.

The vice president, who witnessed the signing of the agreement between President Jalal Talabani, his deputy, Adel Abdulmahdi, Al-Maliki and President of Kurdistan region Masoud Barzani, said he would not hesitate to describe the agreement as “a good achievement in the mean time.”

The agreement, which was signed Sunday, is part of the agenda of the Iraqi Islamic Party and the Accord Front, he said.

Al-Hashemi, who called for support for the agreement, cited approval of key laws that would reform the parliament, release of the detainees, support for the various tribes and in dealing with militias.

He said no single person should be blamed for what was happening in Iraq but all political parties share this responsiblity. “Everybody should start with reforms, and the prime minister, the presidential council and the parliament should work as a team to end the current crisis,” he added.

Turning to the way the country is being run, Al-Hashemi said, “We have a problem with Mr Al-Maliki regarding the administration of the Iraqi state, but if the administration improves, we will have no conflict with him.” The issue of administration is the reason behind the Accord Front’s withdrawal from the cabinet.

The Accord Front would insist on the national reform project whether Al-Maliki is in power or not, but if the current prime minister carry out the reform policies in a serious fashion, then the Front would reconsider its withdrawal and return to the cabinet, said Al-Hashemi.
