Chandigarh : An established businessman and grandson of a former Punjab minister was arrested here Thursday on charges of installing a spy camera in a bathroom being used by two girls who were staying as paying guests in his house.
Ramneek Sharma, a grandson of former Punjab minister Pandit Mohan Lal – who set up the Sanatan Dharam (SD) group of colleges and schools in Punjab and Chandigarh – was taken into custody by the police from his Sector 38 residence after the spy camera came to light.
The two girls, who are studying here, became suspicious about a camera-like object in their bathroom. They informed their parents who confronted Ramneek. This led to arguments between both sides and a minor scuffle, following which the police was called.
Police Inspector Satbir Singh said that an inspection of the house revealed a spy camera in the bathroom used by the girls. “The wires of this camera were linked to the television in Ramneek’s room,” he added.
Ramneek defended the existence of the camera saying he had installed it in the room, which was earlier used as a store, “for security reasons”.
An established businessman, he runs a kerosene pump in Sector 15 here.
Even though the girls refused to formally lodge a complaint, the police registered a case on the basis of a complaint of a constable of the area.
Ramneek was arrested on the day when the death anniversary of his famous grandfather was being observed in Punjab and Chandigarh.
