Patna : Yet another school student, a 13-year-old boy, has been kidnapped in Bihar, police said Friday, adding to the growing list of abductions in the city.

Narayan Kumar was kidnapped four days ago while on his way to the market, but the incident came to light only when his father lodged a complaint Friday.

“My son has been missing since Monday but initially the police treated it as a simple missing case,” said Naresh Singh, a well-to-do farmer in Harvansha village in Aurangabad district.

Patna Superintendent of Police Anwar Hussain said a complaint had been lodged under sections 363 and 365 of the Indian Penal Code.

Kumar’s kidnapping has emerged at a time when Patna Police are yet to make a breakthrough in the abduction of Akash Pandey, a student of DAV School who was kidnapped Aug 10.

Kidnapping has become a thriving industry in Bihar. Nearly 5,000 people, including several children, have been abducted in the state in the past year. In the first six months of this year alone, 2,217 people were kidnapped.

Figures received by Patna High Court from district judges indicate about 1,800 cases of kidnapping were registered in Bihar in 2006, up from 1,697 in 2005.

However, M.P. Gupta, a high court lawyer, said that 4,849 kidnappings had taken place in Bihar from July 2006 to June 2007.

Professionals, businessmen and school students from well-off families are often the target of kidnappers.

Hundreds of professionals have migrated to other states or have sent away their children to boarding schools to escape the kidnappers.
