New Delhi : The Supreme Court Monday temporarily suspended the death sentence of Pakistani national and Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant Mohammad Arif alias Ashfaq who was held guilty for the December 2000 terror attack at the Red Fort here.
A bench of Justice G.P. Mathur and P. Sathasivam stayed the death sentence.
LeT militants sneaked into the 17th century red stone monument, a major tourist spot in the old quarters of Delhi which hundreds of Indian and foreign tourists visit every day, around 9 p.m. on Dec 22, 2000, and fired indiscriminately on the guards of the 7th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles stationed there, killing Abdullah Thakur and Uma Shankar and a civilian Ashok Kumar.
