Swimmer Kovacs cleared of doping charges

Budapest : Olympic champion Agnes Kovacs has been cleared of doping charges after swimming ruling organisation FINA agreed with the decision of the Hungarian federation that no violation had occurred.

The issue arose Wednesday because Kovacs was unable to provide a reasonable explanation as to why she was unable to give a sufficient urine sample at an unannounced doping control while training Oct 30.

The winner of the gold medal in the 200-metres at the 2000 Sydney Olympics Kovacs was only able to provide 25 millilitres instead of the requisite 75ml to the Hungarian anti-doping agency MAPC.

Kovacs refused to give another sample on the same day citing “an important appointment” but submitted one several days later, which returned negative.
