West Bengal a bastion of communal harmony: Karat

Kolkata : Describing West Bengal as a “bastion of communal harmony”, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat Thursday came down heavily on those comparing the “communal fascism” pursued by Chief Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s handling of the Nandigram situation.

“There has been an attempt, including by some intellectuals, to equate communal fascism witnessed in Gujarat under the Narendra Modi’s regime with Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s handling of the Nandigram situation,” he said, adding that such people were “enemies of the country and society”.

Addressing a meeting on the 15th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition here, Karat said such people “do not understand the elementary face of fascism”.

Karat said in Gujarat the government had failed to protect the rights of the Muslims and backward sections of the society while the West Bengal government was committed to protecting the rights of the people.
