Lisbon : Presidents from Africa began arriving in Lisbon Friday for the African-European Union Summit on peace and security, human rights, international trade and climatic change to take place Saturday and Sunday.
Presidents Muamar El Khadafi (Libya) and Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe) were already in Lisbon and Presidents Jose Eduardo dos Santos (Angola) and Omar el Beshir (Sudan) arrived today.
The Presidents of Mozambique, Armando Guebuza; Guinea Bissau, Jose Bernardo Vieira; Gabon, Omar Bongo; Comoros, Paul Biya; Togo, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, and Rwanda, Paul Kagame, were also expected Friday.
As were the presidents of Nigeria (Umaru Musa), Uganda (Yoweri Museveni), Mali (Amadou Toure), Senegal (Abdoulaye Wade), Morocco (Abbas El Farsi), Ethiopia (Meles Zenawi) and Benin (Irenee Pscal Koupaki).
The summit will gather 40 presidents (5 from Europe and 35 from Africa) and 27 prime ministers (15 from Europe and 12 from Africa), and is considered the most important held in Portugal in its history.
Speeches are scheduled by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, Spanish Head of Government Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, and Prime Ministers of Italy, Romano Prodi, and Denmark, Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
