Thiruvananthapuram : The sudden decision of the British Council management to close down its library here has taken the staff by surprise, an official said here Friday.
“Until Thursday, things appeared as usual. But after a hasty meeting of top officials of the council here, the decision was made public,” chief librarian T.K. Subramoni told IANS here.
Rod Pryde, director for India and Sri Lanka of the British Council, has announced the closure of the library from Feb 28, 2008. Chris Gibson, South India head of the council, also attended the meeting.
“We had no idea what was going on. The decision came as a surprise to all the 10 member staff here,” Subramoni said.
The British Council Library was started here in 1964. At present, it has a collection of about 27,000 books, which would now be shifted to other nine Council branches in the country.
“We have now started sending emails and letters to all our members to return the books. We do not know if some books would be auctioned,” Subramoni said.
