Srinagar : In a bid to draw world attention towards the alleged human rights violations in Kashmir, Yaseen Malik, chairman of the pro-independence Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), continued his symbolic hunger-strike for the second day Monday.
The JKLF and other separatist groups, including the moderate faction of the All Party Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, organized demonstrations at various places in the city on World Human Rights Day being observed Monday.
The protests were being held to highlight the alleged human rights violations by the security forces in Kashmir, where armed insurgency has claimed thousands of lives since 1989.
The state police arrested dozens of JKLF activists near Regal Chowk area of the city when they were marching towards the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observers’ Group in the high-security Sonawar area to present a memorandum.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq with thousands of his supporters marched from the Rajbagh headquarters of the Hurriyat Conference to hold a rally at the Sher-e-Kashmir Municipal Park here.
