‘Newsmaker’ Rajan Zed to read Hindu prayers in Colorado senate

New York : Hindu chaplain Rajan Zed, one of the top 10 Indian American newsmakers of the year according to an ethnic Indian weekly, will make more news when he reads from ancient Sanskrit scriptures to Colorado senate in Denver on Jan 29 next.

While he was the first to read Hindu prayers in the Nevada state assembly and senate in March and May respectively, he hit international headlines in July when he read ancient Vedic prayers in the US senate in Washington, DC, and was met by vocal protests from a group of Christian fanatics.

A Reno, Nevada resident, Zed will recite from Rig Veda, besides lines from Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita, to the 35-member Colorado senate. The India Currents’ list of newsmakers of the year is led by Bobby Jindal, elected governor of Louisiana state, Sunita Williams, astronaut who set the record for longest single spaceflight, and includes Sanjaya Malakar, who went far in the American Idol contest, actor Kal Penn, who starred in “The Namesake”. and fashion designer Anand Jon, who is being tried for suspected sexual misconduct.
