Kabul : Afghan army killed four Taliban fighters in the first clash after the insurgents were ousted from Musa Qala, a town in southern region, defence ministry said Sunday.

Thousands of Afghan, British and US soldiers captured Musa Qala Monday, 10 months after Taliban militants took the district.

“During the search operation Sunday morning, Afghan army forces engaged a group of Taliban and killed four of them,” defence ministry spokesman General Zahir Azimi said.

He said it was the first direct engagement since the militants retreated from the town after a four-day offensive by combined forces.

Afghan soldiers also seized a large cache of weapons and ammunition, as well as several police uniforms, he said.

In a separate development, US-led coalition said in a statement that their forces identified two Taliban commanders, who were killed during operations in the recent weeks in southern provinces.

“Mullah Faizullah, a Taliban commander and the Taliban’s deputy shadow governor for Helmand Province and Mullah Tor Jan, a mid-level Taliban commander, were both killed in air strikes in the southern part of the country,” the statement said.
