Bihar doctors up in arms against Ramadoss

Patna : Hundreds of doctors in Bihar are up in arms against Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss for his reported remarks that a doctor from Bihar was the sole cause for Britain derecognising MBBS degrees.

Angry and unhappy over such disparaging remarks, doctors under the banner of Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded an unconditional apology from the minister for hurting the sentiments of all Biharis living in India and abroad.

Ramadoss reportedly made those remarks Friday at a meeting of the American Association of Physicians of Indian origin (AAPI) in New Delhi.

IMA state unit president Basant Singh, who led a protest rally against the minister in Bihar Tuesday, said, “Ramadoss either withdraw his remarks or make an apology, if not we will put pressure on the central government to dismiss him.”

The state IMA would request the Medical Council of India and the central IMA not to invite Ramadoss at their functions and also to boycott the meetings to be addressed by him.

Some doctors described Ramadoss’ remarks as reflection of a “bias” against Bihar.

The state IMA has also appealed all MPs and central ministers hailing from Bihar, including Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, Steel Minister Ramvilas Paswan and Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, to request UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to act against the health minister.

IMA’s national president Ajay Kumar, who hails from Patna, supported the stand of state branch of IMA.

“I would soon write a letter to the president and prime minister to draw their attention on the unwanted remarks made by Ramadoss” he said.

Earlier in the day, the protesting doctors as well as workers of different political parties burnt effigies of Ramadoss here while demanding his removal from the central government.
