Pune : Andhra Pradesh’s P Kashyap ended the fairytale run of J.B.S. Vidyadhar and annexed his second title in successive weeks by winning the men’s singles title in the Patni Computers-All-India ‘Major’ Ranking Badminton Championships.
Kashyap defeated state-mate Vidyadhar in straight games 21-12, 21-13.
Last week’s Bangalore Major champion, Kashyap looked in form from the beginning. But Vidyadhar’s stifness on the court, which he claimed was due to playing three big matches in a row, allowed Kashyap to finish off the match in just 35 minutes. “I simply choked and could not do anything,” said a disappointed Vidyadhar after the match.
Petroleum Sports Promotion Board’s (PSPB) Trupti Murgunde beat team-mate Aditi Mutatkar in a tense three-game clash to win the women’s singles title but not before saving three matchpoints.
Having always ended up bridesmaid, top-seed Trupti, was eager to make up for her three consecutive losses against a determined junior.
With Aditi winning the first game (16-21), Trupti recovered from a seven-point deficit in the second and from then on she felt confident of pulling it off.
Taking the second game at 25-23, after saving three matchpoints, the third game saw Aditi slowing down the pace, resulting in several unforced errors by Trupti
With this win, Kashyap pocketed the biggest cheque of his career, Rs. 100,000, while Trupti took home Rs. 60,000.
Legendary Nandu Natekar and Tejindar Singh gave away the prizes.
