Congress concedes defeat in Gujarat

New Delhi : The Congress party Sunday conceded defeat in Gujarat, describing the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) thumping victory in assembly elections as “deeply disappointing”.

“We are deeply disappointed with the Gujarat results,” Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said here.

Sibal said the Congress would do a thorough analysis of the results to know what went wrong.

Sibal’s comments came as officials counting the millions of votes cast in the assembly election said the BJP would end up with nearly 120 seats in the 182-member legislature.

B.K. Hariprasad, the Congress general secretary in charge of Gujarat, accepted responsibility for the party’s rout.

“I take the responsibility for the results. It is my failure,” Hariprasad told IANS here.

He admitted that the party’s calculations about the BJP rebels, who had been expected to make a major impact in the electoral battle, had gone wrong. “Our expectations about the rebels went wrong.”
