Port of Spain : Former West Indies wicket-keeper Deryck Murray has held lack of self-fulfilment and motivation among the Caribbean players responsible for the downfall of nation’s cricket.
Speaking on a popular radio talk show, Murray, one of the directors of West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), said: “In West Indies, the glory of being selected to play for the national cricket team has deteriorated over the years.
“The huge money being paid to the cricketers should be reflective on their performances.”
Murray, who is also the president of Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB), said that at present money is the only incentive that can be used to lure cricketers. “In modern times, cricket has become more of a business than a lovely game.”
He urged young Caribbean cricketers to motivate themselves and to carry pride in their personal performances.
“The cricketers need to be self-motivated and focussed to bring back West Indies to the top,” he said.
