Sharad Yadav predicts national rout for UPA

New Delhi : Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president Sharad Yadav Thursday blamed the anti-farmer, anti-people policies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for its rout in the Gujarat assembly elections.

He said a similar fate awaited the UPA in the next general election, “whether held early or as scheduled”.

He specifically blamed Prime Minister Manmhan Singh, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Commerce Minister Kamal Nath and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Alhuwalia for their anti-people policies.

Talking to reporters here, Yadav said that Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s appeal to spare irrigable and cultivable land from special economic zones (SEZ) had so far gone unheeded.

He said the common person’s resentment towards the UPA was not confined to Gujarat but had spread throughout India.

“It should be clear to the UPA leadership that if they do not their change anti-people policies they will meet the same electoral fate in the general elections whether they are held early or as scheduled.”

The JD-U president, who is a leading member of the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party whose chief minister Narendra Modi won in Gujarat, avoided any comment on Modi despite repeated queries.

“Today I will not say anything. I will speak on this at a later date.”
