Production resumes at India’s deepest oilfield

New Delhi : Crude oil production from India’s deepest oilfield in the Cauvery offshore basin in the Bay of Bengal has resumed after being suspended Dec 18 due to technical problems, field contractors said Monday.

This oil field, called PY-3, produces about 6,000 barrels of oil a day.

“The production from PY-3 field has resumed,” Hindustan Oil Exploration Co, an equity partner in the oilfield, informed the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

Production had been stopped due to bad weather conditions on the southeast coast.

Besides the private sector Hindustan Oil Exploration Co, the other stakeholders in the oil field are Britain-based petroleum company Hardy Oil and Gas, the Tata group and the state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp.

So far 19 million barrels of oil, or 2.3 million tonnes, has been pumped out of the field, with the potential for another 30 million barrels, according to Hardy Oil and Gas, the field operator.
