Srinagar : A woman pilgrim from Assam was killed while 11 others were injured as huge stones rolled down the hill near the Himalayan cave shrine of Amarnath in Jammu and Kashmir, police said Tuesday.
"Huge boulders and stones hit the shrine vicinity (Monday evening) killing a woman pilgrim on the spot," said a senior police officer here.
The injured were evacuated to hospital, where doctors described the condition of four of them as serious. The officer said: "The (recent) rains have loosened the rocks, which hurtled down the mountain near the shrine.
"The weather has improved over the past two days. We expect over 400,000 pilgrims from across India," said the official.
