New Delhi : The government has decided to put Bithoor near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh on the broad gauge map of Indian Railways in a bid to honour Tatya Tope, a frontline leader of India's first war of independence in 1857, who fought the British at Bithoor.

This was announced by Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad here Wednesday.

The metre gauge track between Mandhna and Brahmavrat, which connects Bithoor, would be converted to broad gauge and connected to the main Kanpur-Farukhabad line at a cost of Rs.150 million, he said.

"It will be completed in the current financial year (2007-08)," he said.

The railway minister has invited Vinayakrao Tope, the nephew of Tatya Tope, and his family members to honour them on the occasion. He has offered employment to two of his daughters, Tripti and Pragati, in the Container Corp of India, owned by Indian Railways.
