Jaipur : In a rare move, a Muslim woman in Rajasthan has served a talaq notice on her husband but experts say this was not permissible under the Muslim personal law.
With "talaq, talaq, talaq" written on it, Hasina, a mother of seven, sent the notice on June 29.
Hasina who hails from Uniara in Tonk district, over 100 km from here, said she was for long being harassed and tortured by her husband, Mohammed Sharif.
"When he started to ask me to bring Rs.100,000 from my family, I decided to divorce him," she told reporters here.
"Though the decision was not easy as we have seven children, I felt this was the right step. My family members are also supporting me in this," she added.
Sharif, who earlier drove a truck and now owns a tyre repair shop, is not happy with Hasina's move.
"I am not ready to divorce her. If I have made a mistake I should be given another chance. I am not going to give her a divorce," he added.
Sharif has received support from the Muslim Personal Law Board that has termed Hasina's notice null and void.
"Hasina has sent a talaqnama to her husband, but this is not the way for a (Muslim) woman to seek a divorce," board member Manjjur Alam told IANS.
"If she wanted a talaq, she should have either requested her husband for it or sought the court's help," he maintained.
