Jaipur : A three-year-old boy rescued from a 180-feet-deep pit near here is dead, said doctors attending on the child Friday night after he was pulled out from the pit he had fallen into three days ago.

Suraj Banjara was pulled out from the pit in an "unconscious" state late Friday and taken to the Sawai Sawai Man Singh Hospital here.

"The boy has been officially declared dead by the doctors," Jaipur collector Akhil Arora told reporters.

He said the state government would give Rs.200,000 as compensation to the boy's family.

Suraj had fallen into the narrow pit in Nimedi, 30 km from here, while playing on Wednesday.

His parents, Om Prakash and Prem Devi, are labourers. The local administration along with the army had been working day and night to try and rescue the boy from the one-foot-wide well.

Oxygen was being pumped into the well to keep Suraj alive. However, the CCTV footage used to see the boy had showed no movement.

Hundreds of people had gathered at the site during the rescue operations, some offering prayers.
