Legislators set up vegetable shop in assembly premises

Hyderabad : In a novel protest against price rise in the state, legislators of the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Wednesday set up a vegetable shop inside the premises of the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly.

Women legislators of the party sold various types of vegetables at the makeshift shop while other legislators of the party purchased them. The prices of the vegetables were displayed prominently to highlight the government's failure to control price rise.

However, the shop was removed by the marshals on the direction of Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy, who said the rules did not allow such activity in the premises.

TDP leader E. Dayakar Rao said the steep hike in prices of vegetables had hit the common man hard. He disputed the government's claim that the prices were under control at 'rythu bazar' or the vegetable markets run by the marketing department of the government.

The prices of majority of vegetables range from Rs. 16 to Rs.40 per kg. The price of onion has not come down despite the government's claim that it is available at Rs.7 per kg at 'rytu bazars'. Its price in the open market continues to be at Rs.15 per kg, he said.

The TDP legislators said the price rise was causing severe hardships to the people and the government had miserably failed to take steps to contain it.
