Beijing : City volunteers for the Beijing Olympic Games have seen more women applicants after the recruitment went on for a month, said the Games organizers' official website.
Women, ageing from 13 to 79, account for 61 percent of the over 110,000 applicants, the website said Tuesday. The oldest applicant is geologist Du Danian, asked to become an English translator during the Aug 8-24 Games in the Chinese capital next year.
More than half of the people would like to work for information service while over 34,000 people put in for emergency service.
The Beijing Olympics organizers said a total of 400,000 city volunteers will be needed and people as young as 14 can apply for the voluntary job on the condition that they get the permission of their guardians.
City volunteers will work at least three shifts with four hours each. The organizers will set up 500 voluntary service posts around Olympic venues and in other major areas in Beijing, providing information, language and emergency services.
The recruitment will not close until June next year and Beijing residents can go to respective government website of the districts or counties they live in for application forms.
