Hardliner Sikh leader arrested on sedition charges

Chandigarh : Hardliner Sikh leader and former terrorist Daljit Singh Bittu was Sunday arrested on sedition charges, the Punjab police said.

Bittu was picked from Bhullar village near Amritsar, 250 km from here, for getting a gathering to raise anti-government and pro-Khalistan – a separate Sikh homeland – slogans at Fatehgarh Sahib May 31.

The arrest is connected to the stance of hardliner Sikh leaders to take revenge on Dera Sacha Sauda sect chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh.

The dera chief has been involved in a major controversy with the Sikh community since May this year after he portrayed himself like 10th Sikh guru Gobind Singh.

Bittu has been accused of trying to incite Sikhs to take revenge on the sect chief for his controversial act.

A former All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) chief, Bittu is presently vice president of the ruling Akali Dal in Amritsar district. He is also the vice president of the recently formed Khalsa action committee that is spearheading the campaign against the dera head.

The committee has called for another march against Gurmit Ram Rahim again July 31.

Dal Khalsa, a hardliner Sikh organisation and constituent of the action committee, criticised Bittu's arrest saying that the ruling Akali Dal was going against the popular Sikh mandate to teach a lesson to the dera chief.
