US woman climber Boskoff’s body found on Chinese mountain

By Xinhua

Chengdu : The body of American woman mountaineer Christine Boskoff has been found on a remote mountain in China's Sichuan Province, the Sichuan Mountaineering Association said Monday.

Boskoff, 39, and fellow climber Chirlie Fowler, 52, disappeared in November 2006 while attempting to scale the Genyen peak and were officially reported missing in December when they failed to return to the US as planned.

Rescuers, who had recovered the body of Fowler in December last year, resumed the search for Boskoff in the Genyen Mountain this month after snow melted, and found her body near the site where they found Fowler.

The Sichuan Mountaineering Association said they appeared to have been killed in an avalanche.

Boskoff was among the world's leading high-altitude climbers and had ascended the maximum number of peaks over 7,800 metres among female mountaineers, including Mount Everest.

Fowler had been a climber for 35 years and was an expert on climbing Chinese peaks.

Rescuers said it was too dangerous to remove Boskoff's body from the steep slope on which she lay because of the fear of falling rocks.
