Roadside bomb kills five in Pakistan

Islamabad : Five people including a tribal chief, a government official, a policeman and a journalist were killed by a roadside bomb in northwest Pakistan, news reports said Sunday.

The blast Saturday evening in the Bajaur Agency near the border with Afghanistan occurred as the group was returning to the local capital of Khar after a police operation to detain a suspect in the murder of a senior medical official.

The region has seen increasing activity by pro-Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked militants in recent months. On February 17, a roadside bomb also killed the Bajaur Agency's top surgeon.
