Brussels : Over 1,000 Bangladeshis celebrated their new year here with traditional gaiety as Belgian politicians used the occasion to woo the community voters for the upcoming national elections.
The event to celebrate 'Boishaki mela' (Bengali new year) Sunday evening included traditional song recitals, music, dramas and speeches, INEP reported Monday.
Some of the politicians used the occasion to campaign for their parties for the upcoming national elections to be held on June 10.
Around 5,000 Bangladeshis live in Belgium and many of them own restaurants and food shops and general stores.
The Association of Bangladesh Community in Belgium had organised the event for the fifth year in row.
In Bangladesh 'Boishak' is celebrated on April 14.
