RSS bid to review Constitution draws wide criticism

New Delhi : Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh chief K.C. Sudarshan's recent suggestion to review the Constitution in order to clamp a ban on conversion, has raised many eyebrows in the political circle and drawn public criticism.

As thousands of Dalits coming to the fold of Buddhism in Mumbai made headlines in media reports, Sudarshan reiterated his demand of reviewing the Constitution, stating that it is high time to do so. Sudarshan alleged that mass conversions were taking place in the North-East. This move was a "sinister design" of the Western countries to fraction the region from rest of India.

Reacting to this suggestion, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Hussain Dalwai said, "I am not surprised by Sudarshan's demand. This is their old demand. During the regime of Vajpayee's National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government this attempt was made. The Constitution review committee was appointed, but then government was changed and nothing happened. Changes can be made if at all required, but demand of scrapping the Constitution is totally undemocratic."

Republican Party of India (RPI) president Ramdas Athavale said, "This is an old agenda of RSS and they want to alter the base of the Indian democracy. They want to create unrest in the country. Dr Ambedkar had written the Constitution. Why do they want to amend it? Just for the sake of their own agenda, my party will not tolerate this."

According to Jogendra Kawade, "There were amendments in the Constitution but most of them were unanimously done after prolonged debate. Why does the RSS want to change it? Their intention is clear. This will destroy communal harmony in the country."
