Pakistani extremists warn CD vendors of bomb attacks

Islamabad : Suspected Islamic militants in Swabi district of Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) have warned CD vendors and cable TV operators they will be bombed if they do not abandon their businesses by June 15, local media reported Friday.

"We request our Muslim brothers that they should not sell obscene CDs, films, etc. Otherwise, your shops will be blown up with explosives", the Dawn newspaper quoted a message as saying. "If you fail to give up the illegal business you will be responsible for all consequences", it added.

Extremists have carried out a series of bomb attacks against music shops in recent months in the NWFP, which is suffering from a creeping radicalisation of society by local groups ideologically affiliated with the Taliban in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The message also warned hotel owners that they should not show in their dining halls what they called obscene films, urging them not to play a role in ruining social values.

"If you do that you will face difficulties in this world as well as in the life after death," it said.

Also targeted are barbers' shops in the province that shave men – which is considered un-Islamic by hard-line Muslims – while female teachers and students are increasingly being subjected to harassment.
