Punjab offers to pay for Bhagat Singh statue in parliament

Chandigarh : The Punjab government Monday offered to bear all expenses for installing a statue of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in the central hall of parliament, days after a parliamentary committee okayed a proposal for it.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said the installation of the statue would fulfil a long-pending demand of all patriotic Indians.

"We will bear the cost of the statue and its installation. This will be an humble tribute of all Punjabis to a great martyr who made the supreme sacrifice in the prime of life so that we all could breathe in a free country," Badal said here.

He said that his government would engage the services of a leading sculptor to make the statue of Bhagat Singh, who hailed from Punjab. He said the government would write to the prime minister with the offer to bear the cost.

Last week, a parliamentary committee okayed a proposal for the installation of an 18-foot-high bronze statue of Bhagat Singh.
