Poor Pakistani woman puts unborn on sale

Islamabad : A pregnant woman in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi has put her unborn baby up for sale in a bid to stave off extreme poverty, media reports said Wednesday.

The woman in her late 40s is demanding 300,000 rupees (around $4,900) for her seventh child.

"I have to marry off my daughter who is of marriageable age whereas I have to pay back the debts which I and my husband have incurred just to meet our daily expenses," she told the Dawn newspaper.

The woman's husband makes 150 rupees (about $2.50) daily by supplying home-cooked meals to offices in the city.

"If a good family takes the child, I am quite sure that they could take care of my child better than I could," the woman said.

The Pakistani government under President Pervez Musharraf often boasts of strong economic growth in the last few years, but its benefits do not seem to be trickling down to the masses, whose economic woes are constantly aggravated by rising inflation.
