Hamas promises to free Fatah security chiefs

By Xinhua

Gaza : Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) promised Friday to release rival security commanders and Fatah officials who were detained during the group's overnight operation in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas' armed wing detained nine senior security officials early Friday after the movement tightened its grip on all the security institutions in the Gaza Strip Thursday.

Hamas spokesman Abu Obeideh told a press conference in Gaza City that all the captives, including several senior field commanders, would be freed unharmed.

Obeideh said dozens of security officers and Fatah party officials had already been released under the amnesty.

Hamas has taken over the security headquarters in Gaza following the dayslong infighting with its rival Fatah movement led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

President Abbas on Thursday issued a presidential decree, announcing the dissolution of the Hamas-Fatah coalition government and declaring a state of emergency in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, because of the fighting.
