New Delhi : If the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corp (DTTDC) has its way, the murky 22 km stretch of Yamuna will be channelised into a clean tourism project with recreational activities very soon.

One of the most ambitious projects of Delhi Tourism, the Yamuna River Development, is just one of the many initiatives of DTTDC to revamp the tourism infrastructure of the city and make it more tourist friendly.

The Signature Bridge, which is a fancy cable stayed suspension bridge at Wazirabad and twice the height of the Qutub Minar, is another of its initiatives.

With eight lanes and 14 km of connecting road, the bridge will run over a one square kilometer lake where water sports will be played. On its eastern side there will be 1,000 acres of tourism related development.

DTTDC managing director Sanat Kaul said Delhi Tourism will go green with its new project on the Najafgarh drain – Chawla and Kanganheri eco tourism complex.

With Chawla, an island in the Najafgarh drain, and Kanganheri, about two kilometres from it on the side of the drain, DTTDC has designed a tourism water based sports complex that will include a kayaking track and a slalom track for promoting artificial rapids.

In its vision 2021, Kaul said that the corporation has developed a plan from Vijay Chowk to the India Gate area with underground passages cutting Rajpath and the Museum area around the India Gate hexagon.

There are detailed plans for river Yamuna's re-development as well, its channelization and creation of water bodies that aim at solving Delhi's water problem.

On the cultural front, the corporation plans to bring Holiday on Ice, a fancy show on an ice-skating ring by the end of this year or beginning of next year.

DTTDC has also upgraded its existing network of tourist information offices with modern tourists friendly I-centres at Connaught Place, railway station and airport.
