Minorities Commission launches Doorstep service

Kamal FarooquiNew Delhi : Delhi Minorities Commission will serve as a link between the minorities and the government, and it will help solve the problems of the minorities at their door steps, said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit while launching the Commission's new initiative ‘Delhi Minorities Commission at your Doorstep' at its first outdoor session near Fatehpuri Masjid here Sunday.

She added that the Commission will also open its centres at Pahadganj, Seelampur and Nangloi.

The Commission members will hold sessions in these areas with substantial population of minorities on monthly basis in order to help minorities get their problems solved on the spot.

Addressing a gathering, Ms Dikshit said, "This new initiative of the Commission aims at reaching out to people rather than making them visit the Commission office to get their problems solved."
Chairman of the commission Kamal Faruqui and members Pushpinder Singh and Arnold James besides Fatehpuri Masjid Imam Mufti Mukarram Ahmad were also present on the occasion.
The Chief Minister assured the members of the minority communities that her government would provide all possible opportunities, including education, for them. ‘‘Urdu and Punjabi academies in Delhi will also work in tandem with the commission,'' she added.
The madrasas in Delhi would be able to impart modern education, including computer education, with the help of the government.
Ms Dikshit underlined that the commission would work in the direction of developing competence and bringing confidence among the members of minority communities in Delhi. She called upon the commission to chalk out an action plan for the coming six months.
"It is probably the first time in our country that a commission will be regularly organising outdoor sessions under its new initiative," she added.
The Chief Minister said the commission has presented a vision document for effective working and planning so that the benefits should reach the minorities.

Earlier, while welcoming the Chief Minister, the Commission chairman said, "Muslims are the biggest minority in Delhi and their problems are also many. In spite of this the Commission gets least complaints from the members of the Muslim community."

He further said in order to create awareness among the minorities and get their problems solved, computers will be installed in mosques, gurudwaras and churches.
