Noida : India will import 1.25 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Algeria annually, Petroleum Secretary M.S. Srinivasan said here Wednesday.

"We would soon be signing a deal to import 1.25 million tonnes of LNG from Algeria," Srinivasan told reporters on the margins of an event to lay the foundation stone of a new building for the Oil Industry Development Board in this satellite town of the Delhi.

Declining to comment on where the LNG would be utilised, Srinivasan said: "We are looking to sign a 25-year contract and we hope to receive it 2009 end."

He said Petronet LNG, India's largest LNG importer, would be sourcing the LNG from Algeria's national oil company Sonatrach.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in April had also signed a memorandum of understanding to give training to the Algerian oil sector personnel in diverse areas covering reservoir management and seismic studies.
