Gharekhan, who is the prime minister's special envoy on West Asia and had earlier served as India's former representative to the United Nations, was elected unanimously at the first meeting of the trust Tuesday.

The trust was reconstituted last month with the induction of former foreign secretary Salman Haidar, international relations expert and Doon School headmaster Kanti Bajpai and former bureaucrat Anil Baijal.

Rajya Sabha member and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) president Karan Singh Tuesday resigned from the reconstituted board of trustees of the IGNCA, saying he had too many responsibilities in different organisations.
