Sana’a : After Yemen signed the Geneva Convention of Refugees 16 years ago, it has received 750,000 refugees, according to Yemeni statistics.

Yemen is witnessing a wave of refugees coming ib from Somalia and accepted 3,000 displaced people monthly from Somali since early this year.

In accordance to the Geneva Convention, those people, coming through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea illegally, are turned into refugees once they reach the Yemeni coastline.

In spite of serious cooperation between Yemen and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR), the growing number of refugees resulted in causing economic, social and security problems in the country.

Minister of Interior Rashad al-Alimi said that Yemen is now suffering from the side effect of the refugees influx who come to Yemen through trafficking boats.

“Unstable situation in Somalia leads to worsening refugees problems,” al-Alimi said, making it clear that the problem is not the arrival of Somali refugees, it is the coming of refugees from other African countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania who all together involve in smuggling drugs and weapons.
