Efforts on to reunite baby elephant with mother

Bhubaneswar : Efforts are on in Orissa to reunite a baby elephant with its mother after it got separated from its herd two days ago, wildlife officials said Monday.

The seven-month-old calf was separated early Saturday when a herd of elephants unknowingly left it behind near Ghatikia, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, a wildlife official told IANS.

Nearby villagers spotted the jumbo desperately moving from place to place, officials said. Chased by onlookers, the baby elephant also injured itself after falling into a shallow well.

"We rescued the animal and provided treatment. We are now trying to reunite it with its mother and the herd," he said.

"The herd must have come from the nearby Chandaka elephant sanctuary. We have taken the baby to Godibari, the entry point to the sanctuary. We have created a small enclosure and kept the baby elephant in it," the official added.

"We hope the herd of elephants, including the mother, will spot the baby and come near it," he said.
